This section houses our visualizations made with the platform Flourish using the metadata found on the Index.
Magazines by lifespan length
Each dot represents a different magazine in the index—the size corresponds to the life span in years. Mouse over each circle to see the magazine title and lifespan.
Sorting by race, gender, and location
Use the drop down menus to adjust this visualization and show trends in race, gender, and location. The “group” function clumps like-traits together and the “shade” function color-codes like-traits. Using “group” and “shade” together allows for viewing of relationships while keeping each variable distinguishable. To view all three traits together, the “compare” function presents a graphical representation.
Activity concentration over the years
This graph depicts the number of little magazines from the index that were running in a given year. Mouse over to see specific data points. As you can see, the years 1910-1944 were the most prolific.
